Jack-in-the-box

 

We slowly, dutifully

Turn the handle of life,

One eye open

For anticipated surprises,

On edge,

Waiting for the jack-in-the-box

Of our efforts,

Only to conclude

That the lid

Has been sealed all along,

And our turning and expectations

Have revealed a different sort of clown
